Chapter 7 (Leyla)

Three weeks later.

I couldn’t believe that I had been living with Jaden and his boys for nearly a month now. The time had literally flown by, filled with a never-ending cycle of feeding, changing, and naps. But there were sweet moments too, where it felt like I was getting that much closer to Jaden. He never really opened up the way I wanted him to, but given what he had been through, I didn’t push my luck. And I figured eventually he would let me in.

In the meantime, I was just enjoying my time spent with Jaden and the boys. As hectic as it was to care for three little ones, it beat the chaotic hustle and bustle of city life. Here, on the mountain, it was like I was breathing for the first time and I absolutely loved it. Some days, I seriously considered leaving it all behind. Why go back to my miserable life where all I did was move from one day to the other without any significance or meaning? On the mountain, at least, I was making memories.

Jaden stepped into the kitchen just as I was turning on the coffee machine. “Good morning,” I said with a smile. “How did you sleep?”

He grinned. “Like a baby!” He stretched causing his shirt to ride up a bit, giving me a sneak peek of his chiseled body. Over the weeks, I had to fight the attraction that I felt for the mountain man. He checked off all the boxes and had a body some girls would kill for. But I couldn’t make a move. I was still getting over Hank and he was definitely still in mourning over the death of his wife. Attempting a relationship, no matter how much I wanted it, was nothing short of a bad idea. “Speaking of babies…” he said, breaking me from my trance.

“Cleaned, fed, and playing,” I answered pointing to the pen where the boys were rattling away having a very important conversation with one another – probably regarding the terms and conditions of who gets Mr. Bear and when. “And your breakfast is ready and waiting for you.” I motioned to the table like I was Vana White.

“Again?” He asked, eyebrow raised and an amused grin on his face. “God, Leyla! I could just kiss you.”

I met his gaze. “Go ahead,” I challenged before I could really think about what I was saying. It just flew out of my mouth and it was too late to take it back now.

There was some definite tension in the room. It made the air thick and impossible to breathe. He looked into my eyes and I looked into his, wishing I could tell what I was thinking. I wanted to believe that something had just shifted in our dynamic – that we would no longer have to tiptoe around the feelings we both shared – but I really couldn’t be sure that Jaden felt the same way about me as I did him.
